Niger hosts key diplomatic talks between AES and Russia

Niamey, the heart of the Sahel, became the epicenter of high-level diplomacy this month as the second round of joint consultations between the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and the Russian Federation unfolded. The gathering, held on July 8, brought together foreign affairs ministers from Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Russia to chart a unified path forward.

Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Niger’s Foreign Minister, joined his counterparts Abdoulaye Diop of Mali and Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré of Burkina Faso for intensive discussions with Russian counterpart Sergueï Lavrov. The talks emphasized the deepening convergence between the AES’s strategic priorities and Russia’s engagement in the region.

Minister Diop highlighted the steady progress achieved through regular AES-Russia exchanges, noting tangible gains in both security cooperation and economic development. The partnership, he stated, now extends beyond military collaboration to include trade, infrastructure, and sustainable initiatives aligned with a shared diplomatic vision.

In addressing the persistent threat of terrorism across the Sahel, the AES ministers called for an upgrade in military coordination. They underscored the need to bolster the operational readiness of the AES Unified Force, ensuring it can respond decisively to emerging security challenges. Alongside defense efforts, the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the AES’s Second-Year Roadmap, which prioritizes economic integration and regional resilience.

Russia reaffirms commitment to Sahel partnership

Sergueï Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, used the platform to restate Moscow’s unwavering support for the AES. He stressed that Russia views its relationship with the alliance as a mutually beneficial partnership, rooted in trust and shared interests. Lavrov extended Russia’s solidarity to both the security imperatives of the Sahel and its long-term development goals, emphasizing the importance of improving living conditions for local populations.

The Niamey consultations follow an earlier meeting held in Moscow in April 2025, marking a key milestone in the ongoing diplomatic engagement between the AES and Russia. This latest round of talks reinforces the momentum of their collaboration, signaling a short-term horizon rich with cooperative projects and strategic alignment.
