AES and Russia deepen strategic ties in Niamey talks

Niamey played host this past Wednesday to the second round of high-level consultations between foreign ministers from the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and their Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. The gathering marked another milestone in strengthening the strategic partnership between the two blocs, with ministers from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso actively shaping the agenda.

Bakary Yaou Sangaré of Niger, Abdoulaye Diop of Mali, and Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré of Burkina Faso engaged in productive discussions alongside Lavrov, resulting in concrete agreements to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors. Diop emphasized the positive trajectory of AES-Russia relations, highlighting significant advances in both security collaboration and economic integration.

The Malian foreign minister underscored how consistent dialogue has yielded tangible benefits, particularly in military cooperation and trade development, all underpinned by shared diplomatic objectives. On regional security, the AES ministers called for accelerated joint efforts to bolster the operational readiness of the Alliance’s unified force, while also prioritizing economic initiatives aligned with the Confederation’s Year II roadmap.

Lavrov, speaking in Niamey, reiterated Moscow’s commitment to a mutually advantageous partnership with the AES, pledging unwavering support for both security initiatives and sustainable development projects that enhance living standards across the region. This week’s meeting follows the initial AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow last April, part of Lavrov’s recent diplomatic tour across Africa.
