Senegal’s political landscape witnessed a surge of public adoration as Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party and current National Assembly President, embarked on a grassroots tour across Dakar’s bustling suburbs. Guédiawaye, Pikine, Keur Massar, and Rufisque bore witness to his unyielding popularity, which remains undimmed despite recent political turbulence and his departure from government duties.

During his visit, Sonko made a poignant stop to honor the memory of Djiby Mbaye, a former political prisoner who passed away after falling ill during detention under the previous regime. The gesture resonated deeply with supporters, who continue to rally behind the charismatic opposition figure.

Everywhere his convoy traveled, jubilant crowds erupted in cheers, lifting Sonko onto their shoulders in a display of unwavering allegiance. Many in the throngs already hail him as Senegal’s next president in 2029, though the fervor occasionally turned into chants critical of President Diomaye Faye, highlighting the growing rifts within the nation’s leadership.

The ongoing tour extends beyond Dakar’s outskirts, reaching key strongholds in Thiès and other suburban areas where Sonko’s influence runs deep.
