The head of Chad’s Rally for Justice and Equality (RAJET), Ordjei Abderahim Chaha, has issued a powerful appeal to President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, urging clemency for imprisoned opposition figures from the former GCAP coalition and the Transformateurs party.

In an impassioned open letter, the political leader stresses that detaining these activists “tarnishes the very essence of democracy” and undermines public trust in the justice system. “True political maturity is demonstrated by embracing dissent,” he argues, emphasizing that opposition voices are not obstacles but vital components of a thriving democratic process.

Chaha warns that suppressing opposition could turn Chad’s democracy into “a lifeless wasteland” and pave the way for authoritarian rule. He calls on the president to etch his legacy in history by releasing all political prisoners, positioning himself as a champion of democratic values.

The RAJET leader champions national dialogue as a unifying force that fosters patriotism and sustainable progress. He reassures that jailed opponents are not opposed to meaningful talks, stating that “dialogue is where the seeds of peace and development take root.”

He cautions the president against misleading influences, urging him to reject “malicious actors who spread discord and hatred.” Chaha condemns fabricated reports and disinformation campaigns, labeling their authors as “enemies of the Republic” who seek to sabotage the nation’s future.

Concluding with a plea for immediate action, he demands the swift release of all detained activists so they may contribute to healing the nation’s divisions at the dialogue table.
