His acquisition, however, has had an immediate domino effect on Rennes’ transfer strategy. The door has now firmly closed on the potential signing of Burkina Faso international Issa Kaboré. Though the club had closely monitored the defender’s progress, his recent performances in England convinced the Rennes hierarchy to prioritize Reynolds instead.
Kaboré’s Ligue 1 familiarity didn’t sway Haise’s decision
Despite his prior experience at Olympique de Marseille, where he made 12 appearances during the 2022-2023 season, Kaboré’s Ligue 1 credentials were not enough to secure Rennes’ interest. His temporary stint at Wrexham in the Championship, where he registered 32 league appearances and eight assists, had showcased his attacking versatility and adaptability. Yet, the staff ultimately opted for a player with a fresher profile, leaving the Burkinabè’s future in doubt.
Owned by Manchester City until 2027, Kaboré’s valuation of around €4 million made him a financially viable option. Nevertheless, Franck Haise’s decision to pursue Reynolds—a player with Premier League experience—signaled that versatility and potential for growth outweighed familiarity with French football.
Could Troyes emerge as Kaboré’s next destination?
With Rennes now out of the picture, Kaboré’s future looks set for a swift resolution. Manchester City, keen to offload the defender, is open to either a permanent transfer or another loan deal. Recent reports suggest that Ligue 2 side ESTAC Troyes could step in as unexpected contenders, offering the defender a pathway back to first-team football ahead of the 2026-2027 season.
