Senegal assembly row: sonko blocks opposition mission approvals amid escalating tensions

Me Aïssata Tall Sall accuses the National Assembly Speaker Ousmane Sonko of blocking parliamentary missions, calling the move a betrayal of democratic principles.
The political standoff in Senegal’s National Assembly has reached a new peak. During a press conference at the APR headquarters on November 5, 2026, Me Aïssata Tall Sall, leader of the Takku Wallu Sénégal parliamentary group, charged Assembly President Ousmane Sonko with refusing to sign mission orders for opposition deputies.
« Deputies were scheduled to travel on official missions, but President Sonko refused to sign the orders, preventing their departure. What is the motive behind this decision? » she questioned. Tall Sall, a former Justice Minister, argued that the majority’s actions mirror the very practices it once criticized while in opposition.
She further warned against using state funds as leverage in political disputes, emphasizing that public budgets must serve the people. « No faction, no individual, and no political dispute warrants blocking the nation’s budget. This budget belongs to the Senegalese people, » she declared firmly.
Reaffirming her group’s commitment to opposition, Tall Sall pledged to maintain pressure through a « reasoned, responsible, and mature » approach. « We will remain steadfast in our principles, and no one will sway us from them, » she concluded.
