The leader of the Senegalese party ACT, Ibrahima Thiam, has sharply criticized recent statements made by Ousmane Sonko, describing them as a threat to national unity.

In a published opinion piece titled « The danger of generalization in political discourse », Ibrahima Thiam argues that Sonko’s remarks were interpreted as targeting Touba and, more broadly, the Mouride community. He emphasizes that such statements do not contribute to constructive debate but instead rely on sensationalism, provocative language, and divisive tactics.

According to Thiam, holding an entire city or religious community collectively responsible for alleged crimes represents a significant political misstep. He stresses that in a democracy, accountability must remain individual, not collective, and warns against leaders who foster suspicion rather than seeking truth.

He further accuses Sonko of employing populist rhetoric, where attention-grabbing phrases replace substantive arguments and media spectacle overshadows responsible discourse. Thiam suggests this approach is designed to energize PASTEF’s base by fostering an atmosphere of confrontation.

Highlighting Touba’s significance, Thiam describes it not just as a city but as a vital spiritual, economic, and historical center in Senegal. He underscores that the Mouride community is a cornerstone of national cohesion, and any public statement that could be perceived as a broad indictment of this group must be handled with extreme caution.

Concluding his critique, Thiam calls for more measured political speech, grounded in facts and mutual respect, to preserve national unity and prevent emotions from overshadowing democratic debate.
