Eastern drc faces escalating adf rebel violence, over 300 dead

Over 300 individuals have been brutally killed by ADF rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the beginning of the year, with victims concentrated in the Ituri and Nord-Kivu provinces. The United Nations office strongly condemned a recent assault carried out overnight on May 30-31 in Ngadi, a village situated near Beni in Nord-Kivu.

Following this specific attack, the Congolese government reported on Monday that 15 civilians and one soldier tragically lost their lives.

In the broader Beni region, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels have orchestrated multiple deadly incursions, claiming the lives of over 40 civilians within a mere three-day span.

The ADF insurgency has plagued eastern Democratic Republic of Congo since the mid-1990s, where its forces have been responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians. In 2019, the group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist organization, which subsequently recognized them as its «Central Africa Province» and has claimed responsibility for several of their violent acts.
