Current parliamentary session structure raises concerns

The Cameroonian National Assembly currently operates under a calendar that allows for only three ordinary sessions per year, each lasting 30 days. This structure, according to Guibai Gatama, severely limits the legislature’s ability to effectively monitor government actions, pass legislation, or represent citizen interests.

In practice, plenary sessions often last no more than two weeks per session, resulting in approximately six weeks of actual legislative work throughout the year. This stands in stark contrast to the mounting political, economic, and social challenges facing the nation.

International comparisons highlight disparities

Gatama points to neighboring countries whose parliaments meet far more frequently. In Chad, Senegal, and Côte d’Ivoire, legislative sessions extend to eight or nine months annually. Nigeria’s parliament operates nearly year-round, demonstrating a more robust legislative calendar compared to Cameroon’s.

Calls for comprehensive parliamentary reform

Guibai Gatama, founder of L’Œil du Sahel, argues that Cameroon’s National Assembly appears “detached from national realities.” He advocates for immediate debate on extending parliamentary session durations, emphasizing that such reforms could enhance government oversight, improve legislative review processes, and better align institutions with citizen needs.

The journalist contends that a more active parliament would strengthen public trust, ensure more thorough examination of bills, and provide more responsive governance to address Cameroon’s pressing issues.
