Burkina Faso: high-ranking magistrates face corruption charges

News. The administration led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré has announced the discovery of a “widespread network of dishonest officials” operating within the Ouagadougou Court of Appeal. These judicial officers, apprehended in October, are accused of accepting payments to manipulate legal decisions.

Significant judicial irregularities in Burkina Faso

Approximately ten senior magistrates in Burkina Faso, including several chamber presidents, a prosecutor general, and an investigating judge, are currently facing prosecution for corruption. This information was disclosed in an official statement from the authorities, reviewed by AFP on Thursday.
These arrests, which took place throughout October, followed a series of interrogations that “uncovered an extensive network of unscrupulous individuals within the Ouagadougou Court of Appeal,” stated Captain Farouk Azaria Sorgho, spokesperson for Korag. Korag is the body tasked with implementing the “popular progressive revolution” championed by the military government.

Substantial financial implications

The spokesperson confirmed that “considerable sums of money were involved in acts of corruption and influence, leading to biased investigations and partisan judgments.” A specific corruption case involving about ten customs officers, who were acquitted after a dismissal, is a key focus. Korag has labeled this a “judicial charade” and believes that such a decision “undermines the fight against corruption.”

Military regime pledges stricter measures

Drawing inspiration from Thomas Sankara, Captain Traoré’s regime, which assumed power in 2022, has made anti-corruption efforts a cornerstone of its agenda. “We will intensify the battle against corruption and impunity among judicial actors,” Captain Sorgho affirmed, while simultaneously condemning a “serious malfunction within the justice system.”
The military government, frequently criticized for suppressing dissenting voices, is endeavoring to demonstrate its resolve against internal misconduct that could tarnish its public image.
