United states backs Morocco’s autonomy plan for western Sahara

The American diplomat reiterated Washington’s unwavering support for Morocco’s position on the Western Sahara dispute. «The United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the region and endorses the autonomy proposal as the only viable path to a lasting, mutually acceptable solution,» Rubio declared.

He dismissed alternative approaches, stating, «Any deviation from this framework would only prolong the status quo—an outcome we cannot accept.» The autonomy plan, he argued, offers the people of Western Sahara and the broader continent a chance to break free from decades of stagnation.

«After 50 years of impasse, a genuine autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty presents a historic opportunity for progress,» he added.

Morocco’s regional leadership highlighted in u.s. assessment

Rubio praised Morocco’s pivotal role in fostering stability across Africa, particularly through its pivotal contributions to the Abraham Accords. «Under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco has emerged as a cornerstone of regional security,» he noted.
