Taiwan imposes visa restrictions on Moroccan nationals

The Taiwanese government has announced the suspension of visa processing for Moroccan citizens, citing reciprocal measures in response to recent restrictions imposed by Morocco. This decision comes after reports that Moroccan authorities had halted the issuance of visa confirmation letters for Taiwanese travelers worldwide, effectively disrupting bilateral travel and exchange programs.

According to official sources, Moroccan embassies and consulates globally were instructed to stop processing these requests, prompting Taipei to take countermeasures. Starting from this past Friday, visa applications from Moroccans will no longer be accepted, with exceptions only for special authorization cases. Taiwanese authorities have called on Morocco to restore practical travel arrangements and are closely monitoring the situation before considering further steps.

Diplomatic context and historical tensions

Taiwan’s move reflects longstanding diplomatic complexities. Officially, Morocco recognizes the People’s Republic of China (PRC) under the “One China” principle and does not maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taipei. As a result, both sides operate without official government representation, shaping the backdrop of this latest visa dispute.
