Internal debates over a potential strike

Within the U.S. government, opinions are divided on whether to conduct targeted strikes against the JNIM. Some officials advocate for decisive military action, while others urge caution. Among the strongest proponents is Sebastian Gorka, a senior counterterrorism advisor at the White House National Security Council, who has publicly pushed for a more aggressive approach.

Diplomatic and security responses

A senior U.S. official, who requested anonymity, neither confirmed nor denied reports of imminent airstrikes. However, the official emphasized Washington’s commitment to bolstering African partners through the sale of advanced defense equipment and training programs. This strategy aims to enhance regional military capabilities in combating extremist groups like the JNIM and the Islamic State.

The official described terrorism in the Sahel as a cross-border menace, urging both regional partners and NATO allies to strengthen collaboration with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in its fight against jihadist threats.

Criticism of Russia’s role in Mali

The official went further, attributing Mali’s worsening security crisis to what he described as ineffective counterterrorism cooperation with Russia. He framed the situation as a cautionary tale for other African nations considering similar security partnerships.

The Pentagon declined to comment on the matter, while the State Department reiterated its firm condemnation of terrorist activities in Mali.

Background on the JNIM

The JNIM, the dominant Al-Qaeda-aligned militant coalition in the Sahel, has been designated a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. since 2018.
