Senegal and gambia settle border dispute with historic agreement

Senegal and Gambia have reached a landmark agreement to permanently resolve their long-standing border dispute, marking a significant step forward in bilateral relations. The announcement, confirmed by the Permanent Senegalese-Gambian Secretariat, follows weeks of heightened tensions after the Bullock incident reignited old grievances between the two neighboring nations.

The conflict traces back to July 16, when Senegalese troops dismantled a section of a Gambian military outpost near Bullock. Banjul condemned the move as a hostile act violating its sovereignty, while Dakar maintained the structure encroached on sovereign Senegalese territory. This clash underscored the fragility of the border, which has been a recurring flashpoint for disputes.

To prevent further escalation, both countries have agreed to resume joint demarcation and boundary reinforcement efforts starting August 15. These operations, which were paused in June due to logistical challenges, aim to install fresh border markers that will more accurately define the frontier. The initiative also seeks to address persistent issues such as cross-border agricultural activities, which often lead to clashes among local communities.

Scheduled for completion in September, the campaign will not only finalize the border’s physical demarcation but also investigate claims by Dakar that the Gambian military camp at Bullock lies within Senegalese territory. This dual approach ensures both legal clarity and practical resolution of ongoing disputes.

Beyond the technicalities of boundary delimitation, this agreement reflects a shared commitment to dialogue as a cornerstone of their relationship.
