The Moroccan government is accelerating its efforts to secure the substantial financial backing required for the development of the Atlantic Gas Pipeline, a cross-continental energy initiative jointly spearheaded with Nigeria. In a strategic move, Rabat has initiated discussions with the World Bank and the US Export-Import Bank (US Exim Bank) to mobilize a total of $26 billion in funding.
According to Youssef Amrani, Morocco’s ambassador to the United States, these negotiations mark a critical step in advancing the project, which aims to enhance energy connectivity across West Africa and beyond. The pipeline is designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria’s vast reserves to regional markets, including Morocco and potentially Europe, through an extensive network of over 5,600 kilometers.
This initiative underscores Morocco’s commitment to becoming a key energy hub in the region, fostering economic integration while addressing the continent’s growing energy demands. The ambitious project is expected to unlock new opportunities for trade, industrial development, and infrastructure growth along its route.
