Monza clinches Serie A promotion despite playoff finals draw against Catanzaro

Monza secured their return to Serie A on Friday following a dramatic two-legged playoff final against Catanzaro. The Lombard side, winners 2-0 in the first leg, saw their lead overturned after a 2-0 defeat at home in the return match (2-2 aggregate). However, their superior league position granted them the top-flight promotion.
Monza are back in Serie A. Just one year after relegation, the Lombard club sealed their promotion on Friday with a nerve-wracking playoff final against Catanzaro. After a commanding 2-0 victory in the first leg, Monza’s hopes appeared to vanish when they lost by the same scoreline at home (0-2). Goals from Fellipe Jack and Ruggero Frosinini kept Catanzaro in the game, leaving Monza struggling against their own fans.
Despite the perfect draw over two legs (2-2), extra time was not part of the playoff regulations. In cases of a tie on aggregate, promotion goes to the team with the better league ranking. As Serie B’s third-placed side, Monza were rewarded for their stronger season-long performance over fifth-placed Catanzaro.
The Brianzoli have now secured their second Serie A promotion in four years, following their 2022 victory over Pisa. A moment of relief for a club that had even flirted with European ambitions during their first stint in the top flight, before their relegation last season.
