A significant political realignment is underway in Senegal as three influential ministers, notably Yankhoba Diémé, have announced their departure from Pastef. They are now publicly pledging their allegiance to President Diomaye, with Diémé notably describing the former party of Ousmane Sonko as an “empty shell.” This move signals a profound shift within the nation’s political landscape.
Ministers Ibrahima Sy, Yankhoba Diémé, and Alioune Dione have officially distanced themselves from Pastef. These individuals, who were once active proponents alongside Ousmane Sonko prior to his departure from the premiership, have now clearly defined their political allegiances.
Their decision was unequivocal. Despite their history as staunch critics of former President Macky Sall and their previous support for Ousmane Sonko’s political struggles years ago, they now declare their commitment to “the Republic” over what they perceive as personal interests.
“There is nothing left of Pastef. It has become an empty shell,” asserted Yankhoba Diémé, who previously served as the departmental coordinator for Pastef in Bignona, delivering a pointed critique. Echoing this sentiment, Alioune Dione, a former Pastef political leader in Diourbel, stated, “I commit myself, along with all my colleagues, to join and become part of President Diomaye’s party.”
