Hundreds of supporters gathered in Dakar to witness the launch of Kiiraay, a name translating to « protection » or « shield » in the Wolof language. Positioned as the party of « Republican Patriots, » this emerging political force is built upon core principles of republicanism, ethics, transparency, fraternity, and diligent work. President Faye articulated his vision for this new formation, declaring its ambition to become the nation’s « majority party. » Already, numerous elected officials and key political figures have departed from the Pastef party to join the presidential camp.
A political rift now fully realized
This recent announcement brings an end to months of escalating tensions between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko. Initially, upon assuming office, President Faye had appointed Sonko as Prime Minister. However, he ultimately dismissed him last May, citing significant political and economic policy disagreements, a move that reshapes African governance. Despite his removal from the government, Ousmane Sonko retains his position as President of the National Assembly and maintains leadership of Pastef, a party that continues to command a substantial majority within the Parliament.
