Football’s transfer market never fails to deliver surprises, and Mason Greenwood’s ongoing saga is no exception. The English winger, once linked with a move to AS Roma, is now set to join Fenerbahçe instead, leaving Italian football circles buzzing with frustration and speculation.

Olympique de Marseille, facing financial constraints and eager to trim its payroll, has prioritized offloading Greenwood. The club’s decision to finalize a deal with Fenerbahçe marks a sharp departure from earlier reports, which had suggested the player was a top target for Roma under manager Gian Piero Gasperini. The abrupt shift in destination has left many in Italy questioning the reliability of transfer negotiations—and the motivations behind them.

Italian pundits criticize chaotic transfer process

Italian football analyst Roberto Pruzzo voiced strong criticism of the unfolding situation. “Greenwood’s transfer is a classic example of how these deals often unravel in frustration,” he noted. “There’s always doubt over whether the player genuinely wants to join a club, and in the end, they end up somewhere else entirely. You rarely see a scenario where a player is wanted, agreed upon, and signed within hours.” His colleague Fernando Orsi added, “Football doesn’t end with Greenwood. Beyond concerns about his character, Italian clubs could secure a far more suitable profile for Gasperini’s system with half the budget. The World Cup serves as a major showcase for talent.”

Alternative targets emerge as Roma pivots

Paolo Marcacci, another prominent voice in Italian football, quickly shifted focus to potential replacements. “Moreira is an outstanding player whose style aligns perfectly with Gasperini’s tactical approach,” he explained. “His market value has risen significantly since the World Cup, but so has the competition from other rising stars like Nusa, Garnacho, and Tresoldi, who delivered strong performances last season. Gasperini has the tools to further develop Moreira into an even more complete footballer.” Marcacci also highlighted Greenwood’s extravagant salary as a key barrier for Italian clubs, suggesting that Roma’s decision to forgo Champions League football may have been a decisive factor.
