Dangote expands in Cameroon with new oil and cement investments

The Dangote Group is advancing plans to make substantial investments in Cameroon’s oil sector, focusing on storage and transportation infrastructure. This strategic move follows a high-level meeting in Yaoundé between Cameroonian Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute and a senior delegation from the Nigerian conglomerate.

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest entrepreneur, has reaffirmed his commitment to expanding operations in the country. During the July 21, 2026 meeting at the Etoile building, Devakumar Edwin, Dangote Group’s Executive Vice President for Oil and Gas, outlined plans to strengthen Cameroon’s energy infrastructure through significant investments in petroleum logistics.

« The Dangote Group has expressed strong interest in investing in petroleum product storage and transportation in Cameroon. These initiatives aim to support the country’s growing energy infrastructure needs,» he stated, highlighting the project’s alignment with national development priorities.

Cement expansion amid booming construction

In parallel, the Dangote Group is doubling down on its existing cement operations in Douala, where it already operates a major production facility. This expansion responds to robust demand in Cameroon’s construction sector, which continues to drive growth in infrastructure development.

Sonara’s revival and strategic partnerships

Cameroon’s state-owned refinery, Sonara, has faced operational challenges since a devastating fire in May 2019. The group’s entry into the oil sector presents both an immediate solution and a long-term opportunity. By leveraging Dangote’s expertise and capital, Sonara can stabilize the market while securing funding for its estimated 700 billion FCFA reconstruction project—ensuring Cameroon’s energy independence in the future.
