Codes pastef alliance sparks urgent call for Senegal unity

The CODES movement has officially merged with Pastef, issuing a sharp warning against what it describes as political opportunists and impostors seeking to derail the nation’s social transformation agenda. In a communiqué released by its Steering Committee, the group argues that the Project for Social Transformation, championed by Ousmane Sonko, faces severe threats under the current political climate.

The statement accuses unnamed actors of seizing control while sidelining those who played pivotal roles in the March 25, 2024 patriotic revolution. Their ultimate target, according to the document, is President Ousmane Sonko himself—the guiding force behind this revolutionary movement. This assessment aligns closely with Sonko’s own recent rhetoric, including his emphasis on the “popular bloc” concept, which he introduced during the Diamniadio congress. Sonko had cautioned that while citizens can seize power, transforming the state requires sustained collective effort—a principle now echoed by CODES.

The call extends beyond local supporters, urging Senegal’s democratic forces to rally in massive numbers to Pastef-Les Patriotes, declaring, “by the hundreds, thousands, and millions.” The communiqué frames this mobilization as essential to ensuring the Project’s success and future stability.

This urgent appeal for unity coincides with Sonko’s intensified nationwide mobilization tours ahead of upcoming electoral deadlines. His recent visits, such as the one to Mbacké, have focused on urging local leaders to set aside internal divisions in preparation for the 2029 presidential race. The CODES merger with Pastef stands in stark contrast to recent defections within the party, where several key figures abandoned its ranks to align with the President’s political direction.
