Bénin’s constitutional court assesses lessons from april presidential vote

The Bénin Constitutional Court concluded a five-day seminar on Friday, 17 July in Agoué, dedicated to evaluating the presidential election held on 12 April 2026.

During the session, members of the High Court reviewed the entire electoral process to pinpoint strengths, challenges, and actionable improvements ahead of future elections. The closing ceremony was led by Vice-President Nicolas Assogba, standing in for President Dorothé Sossa, who was unable to attend.

In his closing remarks, Vice-President Assogba commended the quality of the discussions and confirmed that all seminar objectives had been fully achieved. He emphasized the critical role of rigorous evaluation in strengthening institutional performance, quoting management expert Peter Drucker: “What cannot be measured cannot be improved.”

The participants outlined key recommendations aimed at enhancing electoral procedures and solidifying the Court’s legal precedents. Vice-President Assogba also announced the formation of a dedicated committee to further analyze the seminar’s findings.

Once approved by the Court’s General Assembly, these recommendations will be integrated into a forthcoming electoral procedures manual to guide future voting processes.

Closing the event, Assogba urged the High Court’s members to continue innovating and refining their processes to bolster the Court’s credibility and reinforce public trust in electoral integrity. This initiative underscores the Court’s commitment to transparent, legally sound elections in its ongoing pursuit of institutional excellence.
