US affirms support for Morocco’s Sahara sovereignty in historic message to King Mohammed VI
The Moroccan Sovereign, King Mohammed VI, received a message from US President Donald Trump on the 27th anniversary of the Throne Day celebrations on July 30. In his correspondence, Trump reaffirmed Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorsed the kingdom’s autonomy plan as the sole viable solution to the territorial dispute.
«The United States stands firm: we recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and support its autonomy proposal as a serious, credible, and realistic framework for a just and lasting solution,» Trump stated in the message.
He emphasized that «any alternative path perpetuates the status quo,» calling it «unacceptable.» «This dispute must end now, and the United States will continue driving progress toward that goal,» he asserted.
In his congratulatory message to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, Trump highlighted «250 years of enduring American-Moroccan friendship,» rooted in «trust and mutual respect.» He praised the monarch’s «wise leadership,» describing him as «a pillar of stability» and underscoring Morocco’s «consistent commitment to peace, countering extremism, and safeguarding the security of Americans and Moroccans,» including through its pivotal role in the Abraham Accords.
Looking ahead, Trump pledged to «work together to ensure the security of the Sahel region.» On the economic front, he instructed his teams to «advance economic and social development with Morocco, including in Western Sahara,» naming technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense as key sectors for collaboration.
«Together, we will build a new era,» Trump concluded, urging a partnership that prioritizes the interests of both nations.
