The Republic of Chad has achieved a significant milestone at the World Urban Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan, securing its position as the 11th eligible country for the Building Climate Resilience of Urban Populations (BCRUP) program under the United Nations Green Climate Fund. Previously, only ten nations had qualified for this initiative.
Urban challenges in Chad drive climate resilience efforts
The inclusion of Chad in this prestigious program highlights the country’s steadfast commitment to addressing pressing urban issues, including recurring floods, internal displacement crises, and the far-reaching impacts of climate change on its cities. These challenges have placed immense pressure on infrastructure, livelihoods, and social stability across the nation.
Strategic meetings pave the way for climate action funding
During the forum, a high-level delegation from Chad, led by Minister Mahamat Assileck Halata, engaged in productive discussions with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. The talks centered on urban resilience strategies and potential avenues for collaboration to mitigate climate-related risks in urban areas. A landmark outcome of these exchanges was the approval of an initial project proposal, earmarked for funding between $900,000 and $1 million. This funding injection marks the beginning of a broader financial commitment from UN-Habitat, with additional support expected in the coming months.
