Patrice Talon elected president of the senate in Benin

Following his election as the inaugural president of Benin’s upper house on August 6, 2026, former President Patrice Talon addressed the newly formed Senate in Porto-Novo. Speaking before the 64 senators gathered at the Governor’s Palace, he emphasized unity, consensus, and collective responsibility as the foundation for the institution’s future.

Two months after concluding his presidential term and handing over power to Romuald Wadagni, Patrice Talon has returned to an official role. Elected by the Senate’s newly sworn-in members in Porto-Novo, he will serve a five-year mandate alongside Vice President Louis Vlavonou and Rapporteur Alassane Seidou.

In his maiden speech, the former head of state expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their trust, framing the Senate as a “united family” built on consensus and shared responsibility. He highlighted the smooth transition of power, noting, “The extraordinary atmosphere of recent days has erased our differences and fostered a spirit of collaboration.”

Talon pledged to leverage his experience to strengthen the institution, stating, “I reassure you of my full commitment to ensuring this Senate operates as a cohesive, functional family.” He outlined four core priorities for the new legislative term: reinforcing national unity, political stability, peace, and democratic governance in Benin.

Concluding his address, he urged senators to hold themselves—and each other—to high standards, declaring, “I rely on each of you to remind us when we fall short of our duties.”

This historic election follows the Senate’s official inauguration on July 30, 2026, and the constitutional validation of its internal regulations on August 3.
