Norwegian development minister visits Senegal to strengthen ties

Norwegian Development Minister’s official visit to Dakar

The Royal Embassy of Norway in Dakar proudly welcomed Norway’s Minister of International Development, His Excellency Mr. Åsmund Aukrust, for an official two-day visit to Senegal from May 3 to 4, 2026.

This significant diplomatic visit underscores Norway’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Senegal and enhancing dialogue on development priorities.

Key meetings and discussions during the Dakar visit

Throughout the stay, Minister Aukrust engaged in high-level discussions with key Senegalese officials, including:

  • Cheikh Niang, Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad
  • Elhadj Abdourahmane Diouf, Minister of Environment and Ecological Transition
  • Abdourahmane Sarr, Minister of Economy, Planning and Cooperation
  • El Malick Ndiaye, President of the National Assembly

The bilateral talks covered pressing regional challenges, particularly the evolving situation in the Sahel. Security dynamics, sustainable development goals, and collaborative initiatives were at the forefront of the conversations.

Global issues and multilateral efforts, including contributions to UN80, were also deliberated, reflecting a shared vision for international cooperation and peace-building.

Reaffirming partnership and future collaboration

At the conclusion of the visit, Norway reaffirmed its appreciation for Senegal’s role as a stable democracy and a pivotal partner in West Africa. The meetings highlighted mutual interests in fostering economic growth, environmental sustainability, and regional stability.
