The newly christened Autoroute Donald J. Trump spans a staggering 1,055 kilometers, securing its place as Africa’s longest road infrastructure. The tribute was formalized in a July 2 letter from King Mohammed VI to Trump, where His Majesty expressed his intention to immortalize the U.S. president’s historic recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. The monarch declared that this decision would forever remain etched in the hearts of Moroccans.

Diplomatic leverage and a sudden shift

Trump’s 2020 endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara—tied to the normalization of Moroccan-Israeli relations—marked a seismic shift in the decades-old conflict. For decades, this mineral-rich desert territory, once a Spanish colony until 1975, has been a flashpoint between Rabat and the pro-independence Polisario Front, backed by Algeria. The United Nations continues to classify it as a non-self-governing territory, while Morocco controls the majority of the region.

In a subsequent communiqué marking the 27th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s reign, Trump reaffirmed Washington’s unwavering support for Morocco’s proposal. Describing it as the “only viable foundation for a just and lasting solution”, he dismissed alternative approaches as perpetuating an unacceptable status quo.
