Mauritania tightens food price controls amid middle east tensions

As the conflict in the Middle East escalates, Mauritania is taking decisive action to curb the ripple effects on its domestic markets. The government has rolled out an extensive price monitoring campaign targeting essential food items such as rice, cooking oil, and sugar to prevent unjustified price hikes.

Teams of inspectors have been deployed across Nouakchott, with plans to extend their reach to other regions. Their mission includes tracking market supply levels, safeguarding consumer rights, and cracking down on fraudulent practices that could destabilize prices.

Ensuring stability in a volatile region

The initiative follows concerns over potential price surges linked to global supply chain disruptions. While some neighboring countries have reported significant increases in food costs, Mauritania’s markets remain largely unaffected—so far.

Aissata Bâ, a distributor of imported goods like Kadi (bouillon), jedida (clarified butter), and delia (chocolate), confirms that her prices have remained unchanged. «For now, we’re holding steady,» she explains. «We haven’t raised our rates, and we’re closely monitoring the situation.»

Fatimetou mint Ahmed, a local consumer, echoes this sentiment. «Essential items—oil, rice, sugar, and milk—are still priced the same. There’s no real increase yet, despite some rumors circulating.»

Mohamed ould Bouh, a shopkeeper in Nouakchott, adds that the market remains calm, with no signs of panic buying or artificial shortages.

A crackdown on price manipulation

To reinforce compliance, authorities are cracking down on unscrupulous vendors attempting to exploit the situation. In late March, the Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Diay announced that dozens of non-compliant businesses had been shut down, and heavy fines imposed. The measures are part of a broader government strategy to combat unfair competition and prevent speculative price gouging.

The government’s swift response underscores its commitment to protecting household budgets amid global economic uncertainty. While the situation in the Middle East remains fluid, Mauritania is determined to keep its markets stable and affordable for all.
