Olympique de Marseille are preparing to sell Mason Greenwood to balance the books, with AS Roma among the clubs interested after qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Marseille hope to secure at least €50 million for the English striker, part of which will go to Manchester United, but Italian sources believe they can land him for a lower fee.
OM under pressure to sell
To generate funds, OM plan to sell Mason Greenwood, who is also tracked by Atlético Madrid and Fenerbahçe. The club has set a minimum price of €50 million for the English forward. “Many suitors believe OM will sell Greenwood cheaply this summer because the club needs to offload players,” a source close to the Marseille management said this week. “But they are mistaken. There are too many symbolic and financial stakes involved in this case.”
Roma confident of striking a deal
Yet in Italy, there is strong belief that OM will eventually give in. On Friday, reports emerged that AS Roma are confident they can complete the transfer of Mason Greenwood for €40 million plus bonuses. The French club urgently needs to find cash, as the DNCG, the financial watchdog of French football, has requested additional documents from Marseille before making its ruling.
Will OM sell Greenwood below €50m?
Will Olympique de Marseille accept less than €50 million for Mason Greenwood, as Roma executives expect? Some observers believe the Marseille asking price is already reasonable. “I see other prices across Europe today. Honestly, a player who can score around 20 goals every season in Ligue 1 is a bargain,” journalist Karim Bennani said recently. “If I were OM, I would have included a clause raising the price to €60 million on July 1. I would wait a bit to find a buyer.”
