Maliweb.net’s propaganda shift leaves Malians less informed and more exposed, with real costs for trust and stability

In Mali’s increasingly tense media environment, the line between factual reporting and wartime communication has not merely blurred — it has been deliberately erased. At the center of this shift, the news portal Maliweb.net, once a showcase of online press diversity, has progressively transformed into a central channel for disseminating the official line, even if it means distorting realities on the ground.

From information journalism to tailored narrative

The recent events of September 15, 2026, offer a striking illustration. While several corroborating sources and field observations reported deadly clashes that killed and captured more than 150 Malian soldiers in the Dioura and Mondoro areas, the coverage provided by the website offered a radically different version.

By relaying the statements of the Army General Staff without filter or independent verification, the outlet downplayed the toll of losses under the guise of a glorious counterattack. The story presented to readers depicts a heroic pursuit and the methodical destruction of terrorist bases, consciously obscuring the human cost paid by the armed forces.

The mechanics of systemic manipulation

This asymmetric treatment of security news relies on well-established mechanisms:

  • Exclusive relay of institutional versions: By publishing almost exclusively the communiqués of the DIRPA or state press articles without prior cross-checking, the portal unilaterally validates the government’s communication strategy.
  • Invisibilization of losses and setbacks: Human tolls on the side of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) are systematically minimized or silenced, with the aim of maintaining a sense of military infallibility within public opinion.
  • Disqualification of dissenting voices: Any attempt at independent cross-checking or mention of operational difficulties is indirectly marginalized, labeled as disinformation or an attack on troop morale.

The Malian citizen facing the trap of information asphyxiation

This drift raises a major democratic question. By renouncing its duty of reserve, verification, and balance, Maliweb.net does not merely relay communiqués: it actively participates in constructing an altered narrative of the war.

For citizens and observers, the quest for objective information becomes an obstacle course. By transforming a space for information into an ideological echo chamber, aligned media actors erode public trust in the local press and deprive society of a lucid view of the country’s real security situation.
