The president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, undertook a working visit to Brazzaville on July 3.
Arriving aboard the Majestic River vessel, flying the Congolese (DRC) flag, the head of state navigated across Pool Malebo before being greeted at Brazzaville’s Beach by Congolese Prime Minister, Anatole Collinet Makosso.
This visit underscores the ongoing dialogue between Presidents Denis Sassou N’Guesso and Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, both committed to deepening bilateral cooperation and fast-tracking the implementation of high-impact economic integration projects.
At the core of their discussions was the proposed Brazzaville-Kinshasa road-rail bridge, recognized as one of the most transformative infrastructure initiatives in the sub-region. This strategic link is set to connect the world’s two closest capital cities, significantly easing the movement of people and goods while bolstering commercial exchanges within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The two heads of state also reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening their partnership within the energy sector. They are particularly focused on the ‘Energy Friendship Loop,’ an ambitious project designed to interconnect the electrical grids across the sub-region, thereby enhancing electricity supply and fostering economic growth.
To this end, an agreement was formalized to guide the execution of this crucial energy interconnection. It specifically outlines the development of a mega hydroelectric dam project on the Likouala aux Herbes river, boasting an impressive installed capacity of 12,900 megawatts. This collaborative endeavor, championed by Congo, the DRC, and Angola, aims to establish Central Africa as a significant hub for energy production.
Beyond economic considerations, Presidents Denis Sassou N’Guesso and Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi continued their consultations on pressing security challenges and stability issues prevalent in the Great Lakes region and throughout Central Africa. Both leaders reiterated their unwavering commitment to dialogue and enhanced cooperation as essential pillars for preserving peace, a vital prerequisite for the development of both nations and the entire sub-region.
