Gabon steps forward as 2027 african union summit candidate

The Head of State of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, has formally announced the country’s bid to host the 2027 African Union (AU) Summit, marking a pivotal moment in Libreville’s continental strategy. Addressing a joint session of Parliament at the Léon Mba Palace, the president underscored the significance of this candidacy as part of a broader push to elevate Gabon’s global standing through proactive diplomacy and renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation.

strengthening diplomatic foundations

Oligui Nguema also reflected on the progress achieved over the past three years, highlighting Gabon’s active role in advancing critical global agendas such as peace, security, sustainable development, and environmental transition. Yet, he acknowledged that outward influence begins with internal resilience—particularly within the diplomatic corps, which had long operated under challenging conditions.

financial reforms to empower diplomats

Before reforms were implemented in August 2023, Gabon’s diplomatic missions abroad faced financial constraints that hindered their operational capacity. To address this, the government introduced sweeping changes, most notably a substantial increase in diplomats’ salaries. « We adjusted upward the remuneration of ambassadors and defense attachés not only to improve their living standards but also to ensure they can fully meet their mandates, » the president stated.

a strategic push for regional leadership

These reforms are not merely administrative adjustments—they reflect a deliberate effort to solidify Gabon’s voice in regional and international forums. By placing its candidature for the 2027 AU Summit, Gabon is signaling its intent to become a central hub for decision-making in Central Africa and beyond. The path forward is now clearly defined, and the stakes are high.
