Le Centre des Libéraux Réformateurs (CLR) has taken a decisive step this weekend by relaunching its activities in Libreville, Gabon. With just one year remaining before its upcoming congress, the party founded by Jean-Boniface Assélé is determined to reorganize, reinvigorate its grassroots support, and reaffirm its allegiance to President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
The meeting, held at the Cabaret des Artistes in the 5th arrondissement of Libreville, brought together party leaders for an expanded board session. The primary goal? To lay the groundwork for a fresh organizational momentum ahead of the 2027 political milestones.
Rebuilding momentum for 2027
Jean-Boniface Assélé, the CLR’s president and a former minister, addressed pressing questions about the party’s future during the gathering. Dismissing persistent rumors of the CLR’s decline, he emphasized the resilience of the movement. « Many have once again predicted the demise of the CLR », he remarked, pointing to the strong turnout as undeniable proof of the party’s vitality.
The upcoming congress will serve as a pivotal moment to redefine the party’s strategic direction and expand its national footprint. Assélé urged militants to engage in a candid review of the CLR’s operations and challenges ahead. « This meeting will allow us, without reservation, to assess our path forward and the conditions we must meet », he stated.
A dedicated reflection committee has been established to outline the modalities of the party’s relaunch, while new leadership appointments are expected to revitalize internal structures.
CLR highlights its role in Gabon’s transition
The meeting also served as an opportunity to present the 2024-2025 activity report, which underscored the CLR’s involvement in key transitional phases—including the referendum and presidential campaigns. The document underscores the party’s commitment to the institutional changes set in motion since August 30, 2023, and its alignment with the government’s vision.
As multiple political factions reposition themselves in Gabon’s evolving landscape, the CLR is positioning itself as a key player in shaping national discourse. The challenge now lies in translating this renewed ambition into a robust grassroots movement capable of influencing future elections and strengthening the foundations of the Fifth Republic.
