Fire destroys Kpalimé market stalls

A devastating fire broke out at the Château market in Kpalimé, within the Kloto 1 commune, during the night of Sunday, 6 September to Monday, 7 September 2026. The blaze caused extensive material damage but no casualties were reported.

Course of events

The fire erupted shortly after midnight in the market’s relocation zone. Given the wooden structures and flammable materials present, flames spread rapidly to adjacent stalls and shelters.

Alerted immediately, firefighters arrived on the scene with support from local police and the National Civil Protection Agency (ANPC). Their efforts managed to contain the blaze overnight, preventing it from engulfing the entire commercial area.

Assessment and findings

Preliminary surveys by emergency services reveal:

• Human toll: No loss of life or injuries have been reported.
• Material damage: Several shelters were destroyed, and significant stocks of foodstuffs, textiles, and various equipment belonging to traders were burned.
