Fifa shuts down Algeria-Austria match-fixing allegations

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has officially closed the book on match-fixing allegations surrounding the World Cup group-stage clash between Austria and Algeria, putting an end to weeks of speculation.

Despite reports that the two teams may have colluded to share points in their final group match to secure a joint qualification to the knockout rounds, FIFA confirmed it will not launch an inquiry into the affair.

The high-intensity encounter ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw. Austria equalised in the 96th minute, just three minutes after Riyad Mahrez had given Algeria the lead. The build-up to Mahrez’s goal consisted of 110 consecutive passes over five minutes, raising eyebrows among observers.

Tensions flared on the sidelines as Marco Arnautović was seen angrily gesturing toward the Algerian bench, though no formal complaint was filed.

Ralf Rangnick’s side finished second in the group, while Algeria, third, also advanced to the next stage. Some commentators, however, suggested the result was prearranged, pointing to Algeria’s apparent lack of urgency to defend the lead in the dying moments.

FIFA sources categorically denied any wrongdoing, stating there was no evidence of collusion between the two teams. Rangnick himself rejected the idea, though Mahrez did little to dampen suspicion. The former Manchester City star admitted, “It was a bit strange, to be honest. We were playing out wide and they were sitting back, but at the last minute one of them played a pass, turned, and I had to react. I have to respect the game. The ball came to me in front of the keeper and I should have scored – I have to try. I know the situation looks odd, but this is football and you must respect it. For Austria, the important thing is that they scored and booked their spot. Both of us went through, and that’s what counts.”

Austria now faces a tough knockout tie against reigning European champions Spain, while a potential quarter-final could see them meet Portugal or Croatia. Algeria, on the other hand, takes on Switzerland, with a possible quarter-final clash against Argentina if both teams continue their momentum.
