Football enthusiasts have something new to cheer about as Inter Milan finalized the acquisition of English defender Djed Spence from Tottenham Hotspur in a landmark deal worth €35 million. The move solidifies the club’s defensive line while marking Spence’s much-anticipated return to Serie A.

The 26-year-old defender has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at San Siro, committing his future to the club until June 2031. Following a successful medical examination—both with the club and the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI)—Spence inked an agreement valued at €2.5 million annually, inclusive of performance-based bonuses. The financial arrangement sees Tottenham receive an immediate €31.5 million transfer fee, with an additional €3.5 million tied to future performance milestones.

A familiar face returns to Italian football

Spence’s arrival at Inter isn’t entirely unprecedented. The versatile right-back previously showcased his talents on loan at Genoa during the first half of the 2024 season, where he demonstrated adaptability and tactical intelligence. His stint with the Rossoblu convinced Inter’s leadership that he possessed the technical and physical attributes required to thrive under Cristian Chivu’s rigorous system. Spence’s Tottenham chapter concludes

His exit from Tottenham comes after 85 appearances across all competitions since joining from Middlesbrough in July 2022 for an initial fee of £19 million. The arrival of experienced Scottish left-back Andy Robertson—signed on a free transfer—has reshaped Tottenham’s defensive options, adding depth and leadership to the squad.
