After intense negotiations spanning weeks, Toulouse FC and Sunderland AFC have reached a full agreement for the transfer of young French defender Dayann Methalie to the Premier League. The 20-year-old left-back is scheduled to undergo his medical examination with the English club this weekend.

Final agreement reached after fluctuating offers

The deal comes after several days of fluctuating bid values. Initially, Toulouse rejected an offer around €33 million for their promising defender earlier in the week. However, revised terms including a higher fixed fee and adjusted bonus structure ultimately secured the transfer agreement with Sunderland.

Methalie’s promising season in Ligue 1

Methalie, a Toulouse academy graduate, has established himself as one of the top young talents in French football. The French under-21 international enjoyed a standout season with his boyhood club in 2025-26, making 30 appearances across all competitions. His contributions included two goals and two assists in Ligue 1, showcasing his attacking prowess from the left-back position.

The young defender had attracted interest from multiple European clubs during the summer transfer window. However, the ambitious project at Sunderland under manager Régis Le Bris proved decisive in convincing Methalie to make the move to England.

Record deal for a promising left-back

Toulouse will receive approximately €30 million for Methalie, including potential bonuses. This transfer follows their recent €32 million sale of Brazilian defender Emerson to Ipswich Town. The funds will provide financial flexibility for the French club as they continue to develop their squad.

The five-year contract agreed with Sunderland ensures Methalie’s long-term future at the Stadium of Light. With his talent and potential, the French international appears set to make a significant impact in English football’s top flight.
