This technical setback underscored the vulnerabilities within South Africa’s penal infrastructure, where recurring power cuts—commonly referred to as loadshedding—can paralyze critical security systems.

Incarceration facilities in South Africa rely on automated gates, biometric verification, and surveillance systems to ensure secure inmate transfers. A sudden blackout rendered these systems inoperable, preventing officials from executing the required extraction protocol. • Extradition and asylum review: The examination of the extradition request to Bénin, filed by the CRIET, as well as the evaluation of his political asylum appeal, has been deferred once again.
