On Monday, June 22, 2026, President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo of the Democratic Republic of the Congo hosted a high-level meeting with Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye at the African Union City in Kinshasa. The visit, part of an official state trip, marked a pivotal moment for bilateral discussions between the two nations.

Bilateral talks focus on security and regional stability

The day began with a private session between the two leaders, followed by an expanded meeting where key issues took center stage. Cooperation across multiple sectors emerged as a priority, with both heads of state emphasizing the need for joint strategies to address shared challenges.

A critical topic of conversation was the security situation in eastern DR Congo, where Burundian forces have been supporting the Congolese Armed Forces in countering foreign military presence. The discussions underscored the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure regional peace and stability.

Health collaboration takes center stage with Ebola response

The leaders also addressed the ongoing threat of the Ebola virus disease, specifically the Bundibugyo strain, which has resurfaced in parts of the country. Both sides agreed on the urgency of strengthening cross-border surveillance to curb the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable communities.

High-level engagement continues with strategic meetings

The following day, President Ndayishimiye participated in a strategic session with the Ebola Taskforce, which is overseeing response efforts in three eastern provinces where the outbreak has been most severe. The meeting aimed to assess progress and refine strategies for containment and prevention.

To conclude the visit, a joint press conference is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, where both presidents will address the outcomes of their discussions and outline the next steps for cooperation.
