Yopougon marked a historic moment yesterday as the first National Week honoring women builders of the Ivory Coast was launched at the local town hall. The event, organized by the NGO Femme Ivoirienne en Politique (FIP), runs from August 1 to 4, 2026, coinciding with the country’s 66th Independence Day celebrations.
Under the theme “66 years of Ivorian independence: women’s achievements and future prospects”, the initiative shines a spotlight on the vital contributions women have made to the nation’s political, economic, social, and cultural progress. It also serves as a platform to address ongoing challenges and chart a course for gender equality.
Rebecca Yao, President of FIP, emphasized the importance of this moment: “This week will provide a structured space to assess the progress women have achieved since independence, identify persistent obstacles, and propose actionable solutions to strengthen public policies.” The event will culminate in a white paper submitted to government authorities for implementation.
Day-by-day highlights
From August 1 to 3, the Yopougon town hall will host a national symposium featuring an inaugural panel and 16 thematic discussions. Topics include women’s leadership, health, education, economic empowerment, youth engagement, and gender rights. An exhibition will showcase the stories of trailblazing women alongside successful female-led business initiatives.
Celebrating pioneers
The week’s grand finale on August 4 will take place at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire with a gala dinner honoring 66 women pioneers for their lifelong dedication to Ivory Coast’s development since 1960.
Building a lasting tradition
FIP’s Rebecca Yao expressed her vision for this event to become an annual tradition: “Each year, we’ll revisit the resolutions from the previous edition to track progress and ensure accountability.” Deputy Mireille Bamba of Yopougon praised the initiative, reaffirming the support of Mayor Adama Bictogo. Organizers aim to establish this week as a cornerstone for dialogue, reflection, and recognition of women’s indispensable role in nation-building.
