Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has vowed to intensify efforts against Boko Haram after the armed group launched a devastating attack on a military base near Lake Chad. On May 4, Islamist fighters targeted the Barka Tolorom outpost on the Chadian side of the lake, leaving 24 soldiers dead and underscoring the group’s renewed strength.

The assault came just days after the President’s public declaration on social media, where he pledged to “sustain the fight with unshaken resolve until this threat is completely eliminated.” The attack has exposed vulnerabilities in regional security protocols, raising alarms across the Lake Chad Basin.

Military analysts tracking the conflict note that Boko Haram’s tactics have evolved, with increased coordination and firepower in their operations. The group’s ability to strike deep into Chadian territory despite counterinsurgency measures highlights persistent challenges for security forces in the area.
