Algeria strengthens Niger’s military with helicopter and equipment donation

The Algerian government has delivered a strategic military aid package to Niger, reinforcing bilateral defense cooperation between the two nations. This gesture, executed under direct orders from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, highlights Algeria’s commitment to regional security and stability.

In a formal ceremony, General Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP), oversaw the transfer of four helicopters and essential military equipment to the Nigerien armed forces. The donation includes two Mi-24V attack helicopters and two Mi-171 utility helicopters, along with ammunition, spare parts, and logistical support materials.

Logistics and strategic deployment

The delivery operation was meticulously planned. The helicopters departed from the In Gezzam secondary deployment base in Algeria’s Sixth Military Region, en route to Niamey International Airport in Niger. Simultaneously, an Algerian Air Force cargo plane transported additional supplies—munitions, spare parts, maintenance equipment, and logistical support—directly to Niger’s capital.

Diplomatic and military significance

This initiative underscores Algeria’s dedication to enhancing military partnerships in the Sahel region. The gesture is part of a broader strategy to consolidate historical and fraternal ties with Niger, while also supporting regional security efforts. A statement from the Algerian Ministry of National Defense emphasized the importance of this cooperation in addressing shared security challenges and fostering mutual expertise exchange.
