Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, acting on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, traveled to Niger on Thursday. His mission was to oversee, alongside his Nigerien counterpart Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, the official initiation of drilling operations for the Kafra Sud-Est 1 exploration well. This significant undertaking marks a fresh chapter in strengthening the strategic alliance between Algiers and Niamey, simultaneously enhancing Sonatrach’s operational footprint within Niger.

Upon arriving at the Kafra oil field, located in Northern Niger approximately 85 kilometers from the Algerian border, the Prime Minister received a welcome from his Nigerien counterpart, accompanied by senior government officials. This high-level visit underscores a shared commitment from both nations’ leaders to invigorate Algeria-Niger relations, elevating them beyond political alignment towards tangible economic and energy collaboration.

The commencement of drilling at Kafra Sud-Est 1 directly aligns with this renewed momentum. It represents a tangible, on-the-ground manifestation of the desire to bolster joint ventures in critical sectors like energy and hydrocarbons. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb emphasized that this operation “adds a new cornerstone” to the strategic partnership between Algeria and Niger. He highlighted that this project follows just weeks after the inauguration of the Niamey power plant, stating during the official ceremony, “We gather today, two months and ten days after the Niamey power plant’s inauguration, to collectively lay another foundation stone for our strategic partnership.”

This invigorated dynamic stems from the clear intentions expressed by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Nigerien counterpart, General Abdourahamane Tiani. Both leaders are committed to solidifying bilateral relations and translating their political resolve into concrete programs and projects. Furthermore, this initiative implements the resolutions from the second session of the Algeria-Niger Joint Cooperation Commission, which convened in Niamey on March 23 and 24, 2026.

A high-stakes exploration endeavor

The drilling of the Kafra Sud-Est 1 well is part of extensive exploration efforts aimed at thoroughly assessing the Kafra field’s oil potential, a crucial step before considering any development and production phases. For Sonatrach, the Algerian energy giant, the stakes are multifaceted, encompassing energy security, industrial expansion, and strategic positioning. The group is leveraging its vast expertise for this operation while simultaneously aiming to solidify its long-term presence in Niger. This project involves several of Sonatrach’s key subsidiaries. The National Drilling Company (Enafor) is responsible for coordinating the human, technical, and logistical resources essential for the well’s completion. The National Well Services Company (ENSP) contributes its specialized domain knowledge, while the National Geophysics Company (ENG) provides its geophysical expertise. This comprehensive mobilization serves as a powerful testament to Algerian hydrocarbon sector know-how, allowing Sonatrach to integrate diverse competencies into a single international project.

Brahim Hammoudi, CEO of Enafor, articulated this ambition clearly, emphasizing the company’s commitment to “establishing its presence in Niger within a framework of sustainable cooperation.” Beyond the technical drilling achievement, Kafra Sud-Est 1 is set to showcase Algerian drilling prowess, simultaneously enabling Enafor to augment its experience within international markets.

Niger: a partner poised for increasing prominence

However, cooperation between the two nations is not expected to be confined solely to exploration activities. A memorandum of understanding, inked on June 2, outlines plans between Enafor and the National Petroleum Company of Niger (Sonidep) to explore the establishment of a specialized drilling joint venture. This endeavor could pave the way for more profound industrial collaboration, particularly focusing on skill transfer, human resource development, and strengthening local capabilities. For Algeria, this signifies both an expansion of its companies’ operations in Niger and a contribution to the advancement of Niger’s burgeoning petroleum industry. Niamey, in turn, sees this partnership as a valuable chance to leverage the extensive experience and expertise of an oil group with a long track record in hydrocarbon exploration and production.

Four exploration wells planned

Kafra Sud-Est 1 also serves as the inaugural milestone in a more extensive exploration agenda. According to Rabah Bouchak, SIPEX Director in Niger, Sonatrach intends to initiate drilling for four exploration wells across Northern Niger within the next two years. This ambitious schedule reflects the group’s growing interest in the region’s energy potential and reaffirms its commitment to progressively fortifying its presence in Niger. Preliminary studies and ongoing work have indicated promising hydrocarbon prospects, lending significant weight to these upcoming exploration operations. Consequently, the launch of Kafra Sud-Est 1 represents a pivotal step in deepening the understanding of the field’s potential and charting its prospective development.

A new phase in Sonatrach’s African expansion

The Kafra project aligns with Sonatrach’s broader strategy for expanding its operations across the African continent. The Algerian group already possesses substantial experience in several African nations, including Libya, where it actively participates in exploration and production activities. Niger is now emerging as a fresh focal point for the expansion of its hydrocarbon expertise and operations.

Sonatrach’s engagement in Niger is therefore evolving beyond isolated operations. It is integrating into a long-term strategy that encompasses exploration, petroleum services, skill transfer, and the establishment of industrial partnerships. Through Kafra Sud-Est 1, Algeria aims to highlight its energy prowess while simultaneously fostering the growth of Niger’s oil sector.
