wolfsburg suffers relegation after Paderborn playoff defeat

wolfsburg’s Bundesliga survival hopes ended in dramatic fashion last night as Paderborn secured a 2-1 extra-time victory in the relegation playoff finale, sending the Lower Saxony club down to the 2.Bundesliga for the first time since the 1996-97 season.

wolfsburg’s nightmare scenario unfolded within the opening three minutes. Dzenan Pejcinovic capitalized on a clever assist from Adam Daghim to put the Wolves ahead, but any optimism was short-lived. Joakim Maehle’s rash challenges—two bookings in as many minutes—completely shifted the momentum. The Dane’s dismissal left Wolfsburg playing with ten men, and Paderborn seized control.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Dieter Hecking’s side held firm for much of the first half. Their efforts nearly paid off just before halftime when Filip Bilbija powered in a header from a long corner, leveling the tie at 1-1. The second half saw Paderborn dominate possession, launching 31 shots before extra time began. Wolfsburg’s defense, marshaled by Kamil Grabara in goal, stood resolute but ultimately cracked under pressure.

With Lovro Majer sidelined, Wolfsburg struggled to find rhythm. The decisive moment came in the 99th minute when Laurin Curda, exploiting space on the left flank, outmuscled Grabara to slot home Paderborn’s winner. The Wolves, featuring stars like Christian Eriksen, had no answer.

The defeat marks a historic low for a club that has spent most of its modern history in Germany’s top flight. Paderborn, meanwhile, celebrates its first Bundesliga promotion since 2019-20, a remarkable achievement for a club from Germany’s third division just a few years ago.
