The Tillabéri region remains a hotspot for armed violence in Niger. On the morning of Friday, June 12, 2026, around 7 a.m., the village of Goungo Koré, within the Ayorou municipality, was struck by a violent assault carried out by a terrorist armed group. The attack resulted in the tragic loss of two civilian lives.
Double homicide and targeted abduction
The assailants stormed the village, opening fire indiscriminately and plunging the community into chaos. Two residents were killed instantly, their lives cut short by the sudden brutality of the assault.
In addition to the fatalities, the attackers forcibly abducted a man named Boubacar Yabilan, a resident of the neighboring village of Doulsou Gourma. What makes this incident particularly disturbing is that this is not the first time the victim has been targeted; he was previously kidnapped by armed groups in 2023.
Local militias resist tactical provocation
Initial assessments suggest that this attack was not a mere act of opportunistic violence but rather a calculated provocation designed to escalate tensions.
The attackers aimed to lure the self-defense militias from Goungo Koré, Séno, and Kandadji into abandoning their defensive positions to engage in open combat. However, the local militias demonstrated remarkable restraint by refusing to take the bait. By maintaining their defensive stance, they prevented a potentially catastrophic direct confrontation that could have further destabilized the region.
