The Director General of the ASP, Seydina Oumar Touré, recently issued a statement focusing on Senegal’s stability, political discourse, and the preservation of its republican principles.

In his address, Touré underscored that observing the political and geostrategic landscape in several neighboring countries allows one to truly appreciate Senegal’s achievements in maintaining stability and national unity. He attributed this robust situation to a national consciousness forged over centuries, transcending ethnic, religious, and political differences, a testament to effective African governance.

The ASP Director General further opined that this stability is the direct outcome of sacrifices made by previous generations. He reiterated that dialogue has consistently served as a primary guiding principle within Senegalese society and remains a cornerstone of harmonious coexistence.

Senegal’s enduring tradition of dialogue

Within this context, Seydina Oumar Touré views the elevation of dialogue to a central pillar of governance not as a radical departure, but rather as a natural continuation of a tradition deeply embedded in Senegal’s political history. He highlighted virtues such as tolerance, forgiveness, acceptance of others, the ability to overcome differences, and constructive debate as constants since the nation gained independence in 1960.

The ASP official also issued a stern warning against hateful rhetoric, intolerance, violence, and narratives of resentment, asserting that such elements could jeopardize social peace and the nation’s stability. These are critical considerations for African current affairs.

Reflecting on various phases of Senegalese political history, Touré recalled that crises and transitions of power have frequently been navigated and resolved through robust dialogue and extensive consultations.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s call for dialogue

Finally, Seydina Oumar Touré warmly welcomed President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s appeal for national dialogue. He characterized this call as a clear commitment to lead with attentiveness, foster consultation, and actively seek consensus. For the future of Senegal, Touré insisted, it is imperative to maintain an “ongoing, inclusive, and genuine dialogue” to safeguard what he termed the “Senegalese spirit” across the continent.
