Barcelona blocks free transfers of Silva and Vlahovic as financial strategy takes shape

FC Barcelone has decisively closed the door on two potential free-agent signings this summer, opting instead to prioritize financial restructuring and targeted reinforcements. The Catalan giants have firmly rejected approaches for Bernardo Silva of Manchester City and Dušan Vlahović of Juventus, despite both players becoming available on July 1.

Club insiders confirm that the decision reflects Barcelona’s broader financial strategy. With Robert Lewandowski having departed after a prolific spell—119 goals in 191 appearances—the Blaugrana are seeking a high-impact successor rather than settling for free transfers. Silva, a Portuguese midfield maestro with 459 appearances and every major trophy under his belt since joining Manchester City in 2017, remains a coveted but non-essential addition. Tactical considerations also play a role; the team already boasts a balanced midfield setup and prefers to allocate resources to more pressing squad needs.

Vlahović remains a contingency plan

The club’s interest in Dušan Vlahović has been described as a secondary option. The Serbian striker, who will leave Juventus as a free agent, is seen as a potential Plan B should negotiations for higher-profile targets stall. However, with the club’s financial situation still fragile, his integration would depend on securing additional revenue streams and completing necessary sales.

Financial hurdles delay transfer plans

While Lewandowski’s exit frees up €26 million in gross salary, this saving alone is insufficient to meet LaLiga’s 1:1 rule, which requires clubs to balance their books before completing new registrations. Barcelona must first recover €32 million owed by New Era Visionary Group for VIP seating—a condition tied to the club’s financial recovery plan. Additionally, minor sales such as that of Ansu Fati—expected to fetch between €10 and €11 million by June 30—are critical to restoring fiscal stability.

Club executives remain optimistic about securing at least one top-tier signing before the new season, provided financial targets are met. Internal discussions suggest that relations with LaLiga are constructive, offering hope that Barcelona can finalize deals in time for the campaign’s kickoff.
