Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has once again underscored the government’s commitment to tightening laws against homosexuality, emphasizing the necessity of strict enforcement. In a climate of mounting international scrutiny, he has forcefully rejected external interference, reaffirming Senegal’s sovereignty in addressing this delicate issue.

Government stands firm on legal reforms
The Prime Minister’s recent remarks reflect the executive’s unwavering position on this contentious matter. His statements come amid persistent debates over legal enforcement and the government’s policy direction regarding homosexuality in Senegal.
During his address, Ousmane Sonko stressed that the proposed legislation would apply universally, leaving no room for exceptions. He declared, « No one will be spared, especially not those in positions of power who exploit such situations. Laws, once enacted, are impartial and must be enforced without compromise. »
Past inaction fuels current challenges, claims Sonko
In his defense of the government’s proactive stance, the Prime Minister pointed to historical inaction as a contributing factor to the current situation. He asserted, « This issue is not a recent development. Previous administrations failed to act decisively, allowing the situation to escalate. Had they intervened sooner, we would not be facing these challenges today. »
Rejection of foreign influence on domestic policy
Ousmane Sonko also addressed the wave of international criticism surrounding the proposed legislation. He dismissed external pressure, particularly from Western partners, as unwarranted interference. « There is no opposition to these laws within Senegal. The only criticism comes from abroad, notably from France. We do not need lectures from any foreign entity. » He further dismissed calls for a legislative moratorium, stating, « Even African intellectuals have attempted to meddle, but the process will not be halted. »
