Senegal’s prime minister defends strict stance on homosexuality laws

Senegal’s leadership stands firm against homosexuality amid global scrutiny

Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has once again reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening legislation against homosexuality, emphasizing the need for unwavering enforcement of existing laws. Amidst mounting international criticism, he firmly rejects external interference while asserting Senegal’s sovereign right to shape its legal framework on this contentious issue.

Enforcement without exception: Sonko’s unequivocal message

In a recent address, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko made it clear that Senegal’s legal stance on homosexuality will not tolerate favoritism. During his remarks, he delivered a pointed statement: “No one will be shielded from these laws—neither the powerful nor the privileged. The statutes apply uniformly, leaving no room for exceptions.”

The Prime Minister pointed to historical inaction as a contributing factor to the current situation. “This issue isn’t new,” he observed, “but past administrations failed to address it decisively. Had they acted firmly, we wouldn’t be witnessing its escalation today.”

Rejecting foreign influence: Senegal asserts its autonomy

Sonko also addressed the international backlash surrounding Senegal’s legislative approach. He firmly dismissed criticism from Western partners, stating: “The only objections we face come from abroad—particularly from certain Western capitals. Senegal will not accept lessons on morality from any foreign power.”

He further rejected calls for legislative delays, adding that African intellectuals attempting to intervene will not sway the government’s resolve. “There will be no moratorium,” he declared, “This process is underway and will proceed without interruption.”

Legal reforms remain a priority for Senegal’s government

The Prime Minister’s statements reinforce the administration’s determination to uphold traditional values through legislative action. As debates intensify both domestically and abroad, Senegal’s leadership remains steadfast in its position that legal reforms must align with national priorities.
