Côte d’Ivoire leads in African economic policies with top honors

Abidjan, May 22, 2026 — The Builders of the African Economy platform has unveiled its 20th-anniversary laureates, recognizing nations across the continent for their outstanding public policies and sectoral achievements that have fueled economic and social progress.

A new category for transformative public policies

This year’s edition introduced a special category to honor African countries that have made significant strides in key sectors through effective governance and strategic initiatives. The selection process was rigorous, led by an independent jury of African economists, policymakers, and journalists.

How winners were chosen

The jury evaluated candidates based on four core criteria: the tangible impact of public policies, economic performance, sectoral advancements, and contributions to African integration. These benchmarks ensured that only the most impactful and sustainable models were celebrated.

Sectoral champions and their achievements

  • Democratic Republic of the Congo: Recognized for its mining sector leadership, driving investment and job creation.
  • Côte d’Ivoire: Honored for agricultural innovation, boosting food security and rural development.
  • Seychelles: Celebrated for its education, vocational training, and employment initiatives.
  • Morocco: Distinguished in both health innovation and green development, setting benchmarks for sustainability.
  • Egypt: Awarded for its infrastructure expansion, connecting regions and unlocking trade.
  • Kenya: Praised for its leadership in technology, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation.
  • Algeria: Noted for its energy sector reforms, enhancing energy independence and renewable adoption.
  • South Africa: Recognized for diversifying its industrial and service sectors to spur inclusive growth.
  • Tanzania: Celebrated for its thriving tourism industry, which has become a cornerstone of its economy.
  • Nigeria: Honored for its creative and cultural industries, which are reshaping global perceptions of African talent.

Special recognitions

The awards also spotlighted transformative efforts beyond economic metrics. Namibia received accolades for its gender equality and women’s empowerment programs, while Ghana was commended for its diaspora engagement strategies, fostering continental unity. Morocco earned a 20th-anniversary special prize for its sweeping reforms across multiple sectors.

The vision behind the awards

The platform’s founder, Michel Russel Lohoré, emphasized that this initiative goes beyond celebrating businesses and individuals. It shines a light on nations whose public policies and national visions are laying the foundation for Africa’s long-term prosperity.

Jury’s methodology

Valentin Mbougueng, jury president and international affairs analyst, noted that the evaluation drew from global rankings, regional reports, and on-the-ground expertise. This multi-layered approach ensured a fair and comprehensive assessment of each country’s contributions.

Celebrating excellence in Abidjan

The laureates will be feted at a gala event on June 18 in Abidjan, marking two decades of honoring Africa’s economic trailblazers. Since its inception in 2006, the platform has become a benchmark for recognizing those driving the continent’s development through innovation, resilience, and visionary leadership.
